Perhaps you are wondering just what is a “drip feed” membership site. How does it differ from a normal membership site that doesn’t drip feed the content?

Here is a simple explanation that shows the drawbacks of a “non-drip feed membership site” and the advantages of a “drip feed membership site”.

Let’s say that you create a normal membership site. You then put some of your content in it. So, for example, you add a couple of your ebooks. Next you start accepting new members to your membership site in January. You are excited when member #1 signs up right away. He pays his membership subscription for one month and you send him the link to download the two ebooks.

February rolls around and he pays his membership subscription again, for month two, and you send him the link to download two more of your ebooks. Member #1 has now paid you for two months membership and he has downloaded four of your ebooks.

Now let’s further suppose that member #2 also signs up as a new member, but he signs up in February. He pays his membership subscription, for one month (the month of February), and then look what happens? He gets not only the links to download all of the content for February, which is what he paid for, but he also gets all of the links for the content that was made available in January (which he didn’t pay for). So he now has four ebooks, exactly the same as member #1, but he only paid for one month, whereas member #1 paid for two months.

Let’s carry this out even further, perhaps a year later. When someone signs up and pays you for one month, they get to download a whopping twelve months of content.

Not a very good system, right? A person can sign up for your membership site, pay for one month, and they then are allowed to get access to all of the content you have added into your membership site since the day that you started it. This person can then cancel their membership before the next payment comes due, after paying for only one month, and have all of the content that one of your faithful twelve month subscribers got by being a paying member for all twelve months.

This is just not a good way to run a membership site, is it? It is not fair for you, and it is not fair for your loyal long term subscribers.

That’s where drip feed comes into the picture!

With drip feed, when member #1 signs up and pays for month one’s dues, he gets month one’s downloads. When he pays month two’s dues, he gets month two’s downloads. The process continues that way for as long as he remains a member and pays his dues. Member #1 gets exactly what he paid for.

When member #2 signs up in month two, he gets month one’s downloads only, he doesn’t get month two’s downloads. If and when he pays his next month’s dues, he gets month two’s downloads only, and it continues this way for as long as he remains a paying member. Member #2 gets exactly what he paid for.

With drip feed, when someone signs up as a new member a year later, they only get month one’s downloads. They get exactly what they pay for, no more and no less.

So now, with drip feed in place, someone can’t sign up a year after you start your membership site and immediately download a year’s worth of your content, even though they only paid for one month. They would only get one month of content.

That’s a whole lot better way to run a membership site, isn’t it?

It’s fair for you as the site owner, and it’s fair for your customers. You get paid for everything that you deliver, and customers get delivery of everything that they pay for..
